Chicano theater had been slowly decreasing until the 1960's when the Chicano Farmer's Movement occurred and Luis Valdez worked alongside them while writing Zoot Suit. Chicano theater presents many of the things that Mexican-Americans dealt with and even today still have to deal with, so it was like an outlet for those who chose to take part in it. Zoot Suit incorporates those themes such as bilingualism and cultural importances (music, style), the racism they experienced, and Mexican-Americans role in WW2 then Vietnam (at the time the play was produced). The play presents the culture and issues that were and still are present and have always been relevant within the culture. Zoot Suit helped bring to life the issue that many Chicano’s faced in order to give a certain voice on the discrimination and hatred towards their group.
